Goa

In 1498 the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama found the sea route to India by landing at Calicut. . The Portuguese landed in Goa as merchants in 1505 but annexed it as one of its colonies in 1510 and held Goa as a Portuguese colony for nearly 450 years until Goa was recaptured by India in a military action in 1961.

Goa has a population of 1.34 million and is one of India's smallest states. Its early heritage coupled with the Portuguese and Christian influence over the years makes its culture, architecture and heritage unique in the Indian subcontinent. Goa is renowned for its beaches, its old churches (some of them over 500 years old) and other places of worship and architecture and is visited by hundreds of thousands of international tourists each year. Goa handles 12% of all tourists visiting India. It has a wide range of hotels and accommodation including home stays with the locals which are very popular with tourists.
